How to apply for School Places
At Cockington Primary School we have 90 annual Reception places. Torbay Local Authority manages the placement of pupils and follows a strict criteria.
You can apply for a school place by completing a paper application form in the Torbay Information for Parents and Students (TIPS) booklet.
You can apply online via the Torbay School Admissions website here.
In year applications
Starting school other than at Reception is also managed by Torbay Local Authority and the TIPS Booklet provides information about in year applications.
Parents who have been refused a place at a school can appeal to an independent appeal panel. Information about the appeals procedure can be obtained from Torbay Admissions and Student Services, telephone 01803 208908.
Criteria for School Places
Children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs/Education Health and Care Plan, where the school is named on the statement/plan, will have automatic entitlement to a place at the school.
If there are enough places for everyone who has applied, we will offer every child a place. If we have more applications than places, we will use the following order of priority to allocate places:
1. Looked after children, or children who were previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order.
2. Children who will have a sibling attending the school at the time of application.
3. All other children.
Where there are more applications than places available in a particular category, the child whose home address is closest to the school will have priority for any places available (i.e. the shorter the distance, the higher the priority). Measurements are taken by a straightline distance using the Council’s electronic mapping system. Measurements will be taken from an internal point of the building concerned (usually the visual centre of the building). This is for admissions purposes only and is not used to determine eligibility for school transport. In the event that applicants cannot be separated using the distance tie-breaker (i.e. they live identical distances from the school), the allocation of a place will be by lot.
